Wer sich das nicht entgehen lassen will, ist am 09.07. um 18 Uhr c.t. eingeladen, sich den Vortrag im Casino 1.821 der Goethe Universität Campus Westend anzuhören und danach an der offenen Diskussionsrunde teilzunehmen. A one-day symposium at the Institute of Modern Languages Research, School of Advanced Study, University of London, Senate House, Malet Street, London WC1E 7HU, UK Friday 20 September 2019 Keynote Speaker: Dr Steven Wilson (Queen’s University Belfast) * With support from the Cassal Endowment Fund and the Society for French Studies * What is sickness, and how is it represented in literature? In his twenty-volume Rougon-Macquart novel cycle (1871–93), Émile Zola creates pathological bodies living within Napoleon III’s Second Empire (1852–70), a period which is represented as being engulfed by political and social sickness. It is in the last volume, Le Docteur Pascal , that there is hope embodied within Pascal’s newborn son, the potential ‘messiah’ of the French nation. In the aftermath of the disastrous Franco-Prussian War (1870–71), Zola’s cycle may be a literary reaction to the state of a weakened France in exalting the mythicised image of the mother and child, at once a symbol of purity and new beginnings. Reflecting on the multi-dimensional aspect of Zola’s Naturalism, Henri Mitterand writes that these novels are not merely a form of social and historical documentation, but, instead, offer a knowledge that is more intuitive, modern and poetic, and which might be termed an ‘anthropomythic naturalism’ (preface, Émile Zola, Le Docteur Pascal , p. 48). This symposium aims to explore the nexus of fears, anxieties and desires that society projects onto the body within European literature and culture, from the mid-nineteenth century to the present, tracing the birth and development of modern medicine. It will examine the widest meaning of sickness and the power dynamic between the body and society. Is sickness ever ‘just’ sickness, or is there often a covert ideological agenda that drives and constructs it? How can literature help us understand the relationship between the body and society? The symposium will take a transhistorical and transnational approach in order to see whether, and how, cultural anxieties which appropriate the body change and differ across European national boundaries during a time when medicine is establishing and asserting its increasing authority. The symposium will be an opportunity for colleagues to forge connections and to compare different approaches within the growing field of Medical Humanities within the Modern Languages. In addition to portraits and biographies, there are numerous other figurations of the particular that are meant to depict an individual human being. They can be reduced to a certain social or historical position – for example as lists of names – or even anonymized – for example in bureaucratic numbering systems – to such an extent that biographical peculiarities can only be read in encrypted form. While many prominent people are considered worthy of biographies and portraits, other biographies are often more tangible in contrast and compositional figures to artistic portraits and literary biographies, e.g. in diaries, letters, CVs, photo albums, Facebook or Instagram. The same seems to apply to historical societies in which the turning away from the self is more dominant than the turning away, in which the life story in contemporary history, the self-image merges with the image of time, as it was described, for example, for Chinese society up to the beginning of the 20th century. The annual conference will explore contrast and complementary figures in portraiture and biography in order to sharpen the understanding of figurations of the particular. Nachdem die Hermeneutik lange Zeit als geisteswissenschaftliche Schlüsseldisziplin galt, hat sie inzwischen in zahlreichen Fachgebieten teilweise massiv an Bedeutung verloren. Nicht wenige verbinden mit ihr einen rigiden Intellektualismus, dem insbesondere für die eminent sinnliche Dimension ästhetischer Phänomene jegliches Feingefühl fehlt. Hinzu kommt, dass selbst in klassischen Textwissenschaften wie der Literaturwissenschaft oder Theologie zunehmend von digitalen Analysemethoden Gebrauch gemacht wird, die mit der traditionellen hermeneutischen Auslegung von Texten kaum noch etwas gemein haben. Entwicklungen wie diese werfen die Frage auf, welchen Stellenwert die Hermeneutik im 21. Jahrhundert noch für sich geltend machen kann. Ist das »Paradigma der Interpretation« tatsächlich an sein Ende gelangt, wie verstärkt zu hören ist? Oder zeugen die aktuellen Debatten über »alternative Fakten«, »Big Data« oder das »Ende der Postmoderne« nicht im Gegenteil von einer anhaltenden Aktualität und Notwendigkeit der Hermeneutik? Das Kolloquium diskutiert diese Fragen aus der Perspektive der Literatur- und Rechtswissenschaft, der Philosophie und Theologie sowie der Sozial- und Geschichtswissenschaft. Vom 19. bis 23. Juni setzt sich das internationale Symposium »Brecht unter Fremden / Brecht Among Strangers« mit der Aktualität und Relevanz von Theaterarbeit mit und nach Brecht auseinander. Veranstaltet wird es vom Centre of Competence for Theatre an der Universität Leipzig (CCT) und der International Brecht Society (IBS) in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Institut für Theaterwissenschaft der Universität Leipzig und dem Schauspiel Leipzig. Auf dem Programm stehen insgesamt über 90 akademischen Vorträge, zwei Impulsvorträge sowie vier Workshops und fünf Rundtischgespräche rund um das Werk des bedeutenden Dramatikers und Theatertheoretikers. Bestandteil des Symposiums sind darüber hinaus eine große Anzahl von Theateraufführungen, szenischen Präsentationen und Lecture Performances von Künstler*innen aus Leipzig und der ganzen Welt. Erwartet werden über 140 Teilnehmer*innen aus allen fünf Kontinenten. Zeit seines Lebens war Bertolt Brecht konfrontiert mit dem Fremden. Er war ihm ausgesetzt an allen Schauplätzen seines Lebens, auf denen er sich als einer unter Fremden bewegte. Und er hat die Erfahrung des Fremden zum Angelpunkt seines gesamten künstlerischen Schaffens gemacht. Seine intensive Auseinandersetzung mit dem Fremden ist hochaktuell in einer Zeit der Migrationsgesellschaften, in denen Fremdenangst und Fremdenhass alltäglich geworden sind, und die unsere Unfähigkeit, unter Fremden zusammenzuleben, zum Problem werden lassen. The Annual Seminar is a renowned three-day conference format of Bielefeld Gradua­te School in History and Sociology (BGHS) approaching 11 years in 2019. In coope­ration with the collaborative research center (SFB 1288) on “Practices of Compa­ring,” in this year’s conference international researchers at an early point in their careers will present their work. The conference deals with the construction of race as well as structural and practical dimensions of racism in an interdisciplinary framework. Whether in natural sciences, social and human sciences or humanities, race as a concept or central category has been widely contested and criticized. But the cons­truction of race is a crucial part in the processes of making mankind and as an ana­lytical category it is intertwined with the emergence of disciplines in their respective epistemological contexts (e.g. “scientific racism”). The interdisciplinary conference will discuss connections to related discourses such as astronomy, medicine and health as well as philosophy. Furthermore, racism often finds its expression in a more complex set of practices by actors, institutions and structures that transverses and involves other categories and relations of (in-)equality such as gender and class. For this reason, the conference asks for the status of racism in the reproduction of power relations, processes of social differentiation and material inscriptions, e.g. in schools as institutions, memory culture, state formation or the literary canon. In all of this, we see practices of comparing as an innovative focal point: By making comparisons the subject and not the method of our conference we want to ask who is comparing, what is compared, when and in which regard? By detecting and describing concrete practices of comparing important insights can be gained into the ways race and racism are being made. Keynotes will be held by Nikita Dhawan (Justus Liebig University Giessen), Manuela Boatcă (University of Freiburg) and Demetrius L. Eudell (Wesleyan University). Another highlight will be an experimental collage film by the artist Ojudun Taiwo Jacob and an exhibition of Diana Ejaita’s art works – both related to the topic of the conference. World Editors. Dynamics of Global Publishing and the Latin American Case between the Archive and the Digital Age July 1-3, 2019 – Schloss Herrenhausen, Hannover funded by VolkswagenStiftung Organization and Concept: Gesine Müller (Cologne) Gustavo Guerrero (Paris) Benjamin Loy (Cologne) The debate around the concept of World Literature has reemerged in tandem with a period of globalization that began in the 1980s, and for the past two decades it has been in a highly charged, critical, and intense phase which has not yet come to an end. However, a significant part of scholarship in the field has lacked to attend the question of how World Literature actually is “made”, i.e. to analyze the complex interaction of the multiple material, economic, and literary factors at stake in global processes of circulation of books. From a perspective informed by materialism, sociology and historiography the conference considers literature or, to be more precise, books as products that have to undergo a series of processes enabling a text to cross borders (or not) and to be transformed into globally circulating commodities, combining the complex operations of selection and the aggregation of different kinds of value. To overcome the widespread disciplinary and methodological narrowness of World Literature studies, the conference will gather around 40 scholars from different disciplines ranging from Literary Studies to Book History and Digital Humanities to analyze the complex networks and actors that influence in processes of global circulation of literature: gatekeepers as publishers, literary agents, book fairs, festivals and prices, but also politics of translation and the role of literary and editorial archives and new media and digitalization will be attended with regard to Latin America as a case study and in dialogue with several representatives of the global book market. This one-day symposium discusses how the lens of contemporary art can engage with the genre of the agricultural treatises and manuals that have long attracted the attention of scholars in the history of science. Interrogating how art situated at the animal-machine interface can contribute to the analysis of knowledge production presented in treatises involving animals of particular utility or value. This workshop raises questions about how to depict and communicate three-dimensional and tactile prototypes and models involving living things into two-dimensional spaces. In this program, workshop participants will discuss how to productively open up the conventions of treatises to new artistic interpretation, while simultaneously analyzing them for what they may indicate about the time and the fabric of their respective societies. Artist-in-Residence Vivian Xu will discuss her process of reviewing, analyzing, and comparing primary sources in order to develop an artist book that engages with the genre of nongshu （農書), or agricultural treatises in East Asia. Approaching the historical Chinese sericultural treatises from the 14th century, Japanese sericultural textbooks used in the early 20th century, and their European counterparts almost like an archaeologist, Xu responds to this genre by creating a “manual” or “treatise” accounting her own research into sericulture, conducted through her installation art series The Silkworm Project. Her artist book seeks to illuminate both the conflicts of the cultural and historical context in which her series sits, as well as a speculative future of sericulture and the alien-like alternative perspective of the silkworm. This symposium’s artistic inquiry into agricultural treatises, especially through art created in collaboration with silkworms, facilitates discussion about the various approaches toward the design, compilation, and construction of treatises and artist books across various regional contexts. Agricultural treatises serve various purposes: to signify expertise, to communicate know-how, to record experiential outcomes, to instruct by illustration and text. While they similarly provide some instruction, artist books showcase artistic sophistication, processes, and reflections. Artist books materialize not only the artist’s aesthetic relation to the topic, but connect the artwork to a series of traditions – bibliophile, technical and material traditions. The artist book is an ideal autonomous genre for creating a ‘mobile sculpture’ of the artist’s inner mind while connecting to existing forms of engagement. Participants will interrogate how well the formats of the agricultural treatise or artist book actually work as technologies of communicating instruction, and how these treatises are deliberately imperfect and thereby serve to hinder the actual fidelity of transmitted knowledge. We anticipate that this discussion will provide a space for reflecting upon the two-dimensional artist book as a means to convey practice, art, and knowledge today. In 2013, she received her MFA in Design and Technology at Parsons the New School for Design. She is an independent artist. Her work explores the boundaries between bio and electronic media in creating new forms of machine logic, life and sensory systems, and often take the form of object, installation and/or wearable.
